Higher education pupil numbers (FOI)

Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by Government of Jersey and published on 23 November 2023.
Prepared internally, no external costs.

Request

Please provide a table showing the proportion of Jersey school leavers, 18-year-olds or any other relevant variable, who have gone on to higher education, for 2023, 2022 and any earlier years for which data is available.

Please provide any internal analysis that has been done, or that failing best estimates, comparing statistics for Jersey with those for England and other jurisdictions.

Response

The department has determined that to provide specific data sets would involve in depth analysis of each 18-year-old school leaver. To produce the data would   exceed the timescales prescribed in the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014, Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

The table below shows the proportion of Jersey school leavers (18-year-olds) that entered UK universities and Highlands College degree courses in the academic years from 2019/2020 to 2021/2022:

YearProportion of 18-year-olds in Higher Education
202145%
202047%
201945%

The above is a combination of data from Highlands College and JISC / HESA and uses the year 13 Summer term school census data as the overall cohort size.

JISC / HESA provide UK University figures based on those who’s permanent or home address prior to entry to the course was Jersey. It is a condition of our JISC / HESA contract that raw numbers are not published and should be rounded to the nearest 10.

2022/2023 JISC/HESA data will be available in January 2024.

2023/2024 JISC/HESA data will be available in January 2025.

These datasets do not give a specific view of young people in higher education as requested due to the many variables.

There will be students studying off-island, some of whom will be self-funding, for example in Europe or elsewhere in the world that are not included in the above figures.

In addition, some students do not go to university immediately after completing year 13, therefore some students counted in the overall cohort will not be showing in the University datasets as they only contain 18-year-olds.
