Response

For sickness information from 2012 to 2014, you can read a previous response.

Sickness absence in the States of Jersey (FOI)

The information provided in this response contains a breakdown by year and department, the amount of days and cost of absence for those years.

The below tables show the same information for 2015, and sickness taken between 1 January 2016 to 31 March 2016, with the following assumptions:

  • the cost of sickness is an estimated figure, calculated from an employee’s hourly basic pay rate, multiplied by the hours of sickness leave taken (regardless of whether the sickness leave qualified for full pay, half pay, or nil pay)
  • the reasons for sickness are not broken down by department due to the potential that individual employees could be identifiable
  • Ports of Jersey and Housing are not in this information
  • at the beginning of 2016, Human Resources changed the way it calculates the average days sick per employee. Previously, we would divide the total number of days taken, by the full-time equivalent (FTE) of that reporting period. Now, we divide the total number of days taken, by the average full-time equivalent (FTE) of the reporting period, to match reporting best practices
