Request

Gender ideology is a contested belief, not based on fact or evidence. Yet many schools are teaching it as if it is fact.  For each primary and secondary school in Jersey I would like:

A list of books that are either currently in the school library or on order for the school library which are on the topic of gender, gender identity, transgender, LGBTQ etc. These key words may or may not be in the title or description of the books. Please specify whether they are currently in the library or on order.

Response

Please see attached a list of books that are currently on order or within a Government of Jersey school covering topics such as gender, gender identity, transgender and LGBTQ.

Book list.pdf

Please note not all Government of Jersey schools have a central library or central library system in order to cross reference key words such as gender, gender identity, transgender and LGBTQ, which may or may not be in the title or description of the books. The department has determined that to provide a full list of specific books would involve manually checking each book title and or book description. To produce the data would take in excess of 12.5 working hours therefore Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

A collection of books celebrating diverse and inclusive stories were gifted to all Government of Jersey Primary schools and Jersey Library in 2022 by the Jersey Community Relations Trust. The Umbrella Book Collection represents topics such as gender and many other topics including:

  • Disabilities
  • Body positivity
  • Refugees
  • Adoption and fostering
  • Multicultralism
  • Beliefs
  • LGBTQ+ characters
  • Body positivity
  • Gender stereotypes

Article applied

Article 16 - A scheduled public authority may refuse to supply information if cost excessive

(1) A scheduled public authority that has been requested to supply information may refuse to supply the information if it estimates that the cost of doing so would exceed an amount determined in the manner prescribed by Regulations.
