In each year for the last ten years, please provide the total number of available hospital beds broken down by public and private.

B

For each of these years, please also share the number of recorded instances of (a) a public bed being used for a private patient, and (b) a private bed being used for a public patient.

Response

Records for the period prior to 2018 are not held in a format which enables the data sought to be extracted within the timescales prescribed in the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014. Therefore, Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

Annual data for the period 2018 to 2023 (inclusive) is provided in the attached tables. Table 1 details the number of available hospital beds, as at the end of each year. Table 2 details Public patient discharges from Private beds, and Private patient discharges from Public beds. Where numbers are small, disclosure control is applied to protect individuals from identification and numbers fewer than five are shown as ‘<5’. Article 25 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

Paediatric beds (Robin Ward) are excluded.

General and Acute Private Beds:

  • Sorel Ward

Day Unit Beds (includes “Chairs”): 

  • Day Surgery Unit (DSU)
  • Medical Day Unit (MDU)
  • Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) / Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
  • Oncology Suite
  • Renal Unit

Maternity Unit and SCBU / JNU:

  • Maternity Unit beds
  • Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) / Jersey Neonatal Unit (JNU) cots

 Rehabilitation Beds:

  • Samares Ward

During the pandemic, the rehabilitation unit was moved to Plemont Ward within Jersey General Hospital, and bed data are included in the ‘General and Acute Hospital Beds’ category.

Articles applied

Article 16 - A scheduled public authority may refuse to supply information if cost excessive

(1) A scheduled public authority that has been requested to supply information may refuse to supply the information if it estimates that the cost of doing so would exceed an amount determined in the manner prescribed by Regulations. 

Article 25 - Personal information

(1) Information is absolutely exempt information if it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018.

(2) Information is absolutely exempt information if –

(a) it constitutes personal data of which the applicant is not the data subject as defined in the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018; and

(b) its supply to a member of the public would contravene any of the data protection principles, as defined in that Law.
