Request

A

When was the "Basel Convention on Trans-boundary transport of Hazardous materials" (1988 and 1992) recognised in Jersey and if it has been adopted into any Laws or Regulations in Jersey?

B

Since the UK signed on behalf of the Crown Dependencies, please confirm that Jersey is bound by the Convention.

C

Please confirm why the UK government made specific reference to Jersey to the Convention in 2007?

Response

A

In September 2007, the Basel Convention (the ‘Convention’) was extended to Jersey through a United Kingdom Government ratification.  The Convention was implemented through the Waste Management (Jersey) Law 2005, which is the legislation that requires Jersey to follow the requirements of the Convention.

B

The Waste Management (Jersey) Law 2005 requires waste movements to be carried out in accordance with the Basel Convention.
