Request

Can you please tell me how many reported cases of malignant melanoma there were in Jersey in the year 2012? And also for the year 2013?

Response

Based on specimen analysis and subsequent diagnosis, the Health and Social Services Department can offer the following statistics:

  • the Jersey General Hospital had 48 patients with a histological diagnosis of malignant melanoma in 2012
  • the Jersey General Hospital had 64 patients with a histological diagnosis of malignant melanoma in 2013

The Health and Social Services Department cannot confirm if they were first diagnosis specimens, ie new cases.

There is a possibility that some of the cases may be from patients who had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma before 1 January 2012.

The most recent age standardised incidence rates for malignant melanoma are in the 2013 Channel Island Cancer Report below

Verified incidence rates for 2012 to 2014 and the latest trends will be available in the Cancer Registration Report (2016) expected to be published later this year.
