Request

How many women in their first trimester of pregnancy attended A&E with a concern for their pregnancy over a recent 12-month period?

Response

It is not possible to provide data for first trimester Emergency Department (ED) attendance, as gestation-specific data for pregnancy-related attendances is not available to report from a central record. Whilst information on gestation would be documented in individual medical records, examining all records in scope of this request would exceed the timescales prescribed in the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014. Therefore, Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 has been applied.

The data below relates to all ED attendances where pregnancy (including possible pregnancy) has been recorded as part of the diagnosis or condition of the patient, or where the ‘ED Outcome’ has been recorded as either an admission to the Maternity ward or as a Ward Attender on the Maternity ward. Ward attenders are those who have attended ED and have subsequently been sent to the Maternity Ward for investigation and / or treatment.

Without review of individual records, it is not possible to confirm that the reason for the ED attendance is definitively pregnancy-related, or to discern the stage of pregnancy.
