A

Please provide figures of the Magistrate Court and Royal Court sentencing outcomes that resulted in custodial sentences in 2024

B

Please provide figures of the Magistrate Court and Royal Court which were non-custodial and/or referred to the probation service for 2024 and 2023

Response

A

We have assumed that this question is asking about adult defendants only because Magistrate’s Court deals with defendants who are 18 years’ of age, or over. Accordingly, this response does not include any defendant who is under the age of 18.

The number of adults (aged 18 or above) receiving custodial sentences in 2024 for both the Magistrate’s Court and Royal Court are shown below:

Court Numbers of adult defendants given custodial sentences
Magistrate's Court60
Royal Court 68
Total 128

Please note the following:

  • The numbers above do not include those receiving suspended sentences or Community Service Orders in lieu of a custodial sentence.
  • Each entry relates to a single defendant, rather than to the number of offences that they have committed, so therefore, the number 60 relates to 60 defendants. If any defendant committed a number of offences, some or all of which resulted in custodial sentences, the figures do not reflect that.
  • Royal Court judgments are published on the Jersey Law website Jersey Law | Search All Judgments

B

This response deals with adult defendants only, for the same reason as outlined above.

There are many types of non-custodial sentences. This response details non-custodial sentences which involved the probation service.

This response therefore deals with two types of non-custodial sentences - probation orders and community service orders.

The number of adult (aged 18 and above) non-custodial sentences of this type imposed during 2023 and 2024 by the Magistrate’s Court and the Royal Court are shown below:
