Summary
The Young People’s Health and Lifestyle Survey (formally known as the Health Related Behaviours Survey) is a very important survey for Island health as it provides key indicators for assessing progress against strategic priorities.
The results show a continuing trend of improving health-related behaviours in young people with sustained decreases in rates of smoking and drinking and an increase in physical activity and consumption of fruit and vegetables.
Less positive findings include nearly one in five young people remain overweight or obese as well as a slight trend in reductions of self esteem since 2006. The survey results identify key areas for action.
The survey gives a reliable snapshot of children’s attitudes and behaviours that affect their health. It is the only island wide survey to ask 10 to 15 year olds about their health. As a result we have a comprehensive picture of children and young people’s health.
This work has been led and carried out by the Public Health Department.
