Relevant interests of the site
Historic interest
Late 19th century villa.
Architectural interest
The core of the property is a late 19th century stucco house with emphasised quoins and voussoirs, and round-headed windows facing the sea. However, the house has been subject to extensive late 20th century alterations, extensions and embellishments - both to the roadside and seaside - which have impacted on its historic character .
Advice offered by MRLAG (and others if stated)
MRLAG discussed the building at its meeting on 6 April 2009. 8 members advised against registration due to the 20th century alterations and extensions. 6 members advised that registration as BLI would be appropriate as the house has a roadside elevation as a late 19th century villa and is in a location of particular scenic value.
Jersey Heritage recommendation
The house has been subject to extensive late 20th century alterations, extensions and embellishments, and as such does not meet the criteria for registration.
Justification relating to criteria
The registration of St Aubin’s House would not be in accordance with the existing criteria for assessment and designation of historic buildings, as the property does not substantially retain its historic form and detail, and does not make a significant or positive contribution to the architectural and historical identity, character or amenity of Jersey.
