Relevant interests of the site
Historic interest
The house dates to the early 19th century (a contract 5 February 1814 records the sale of the house by Philippe de Faye to Jean Monamy). The 1935 OS map shows that the house was once part of a small farmstead with an adjoining range to the rear of the house and detached outbuildings set around a central yard – all since demolished. The property now comprises the former farmhouse with a large garden area – the frontage retaining a pair of entrance gates.
Architectural interest
The house is 5-bay, 2-storey. It is rendered in imitation ashlar with emphasised quoins and voussoirs. The door and windows are timber replacements. There is a slate roof with a pair of rendered chimneystacks with decorative banding. To the rear of the house is a 20th century extension of no interest.
The front garden is bounded by a rubble granite wall with bull-nose brick coping. The original early 19th century gateway to the house survives. It has short incurving granite walls with dressed granite coping surmounted by decorative iron railings, the original gate, and a pair of flanking rendered piers. Another gateway to the west of the house retains its rendered piers only.
Scenic interest / group value
Homestead makes a positive scenic contribution.
Advice offered by MRLAG (and others if stated)
MRLAG discussed the property at its meeting on 24 November 2008. Members were unanimous that Homestead should be retained on the Register as a BLI.
Jersey Heritage recommendation
It is proposed that c.1814 house and enclosed front garden be retained on the register as a BLI.
Justification relating to criteria
The registration of Homestead as a BLI is in accordance with the existing criteria for assessment and designation of historic buildings:
- The former farmhouse, including the enclosed front garden, retains its external historic form and detail, and so make a significant and positive contribution to the architectural and historical character and appearance of Jersey;
- Homestead is significant for its early C19 architectural design and composition;
- Homestead illustrates aspects of Jersey’s social, economic and cultural history.
- The farmhouse and front garden make a positive scenic contribution to La Vielle Rue.
