Referrals

Your GP or another specialist must write a referral for you to receive an appointment. Self-referrals and walk-in appointments are not accepted. Our consultants review, then prioritise all referrals before adding you to the waiting list.

Waiting times

Waiting times for the ENT Department vary with the number of referrals received. All referrals are ranked Urgent, Soon or Routine based on the information from your GP.

Patients are then seen according to priority and in date order that the referral is received.

Please note the priority given may be different from that your GP believes. The consultant will prioritise you based on the information given to them.

Hospital waiting lists

Your appointment

We have a variety of clinics that take place in the ENT Department. Depending on the reason for your visit, you will see either a specialist doctor or nurse at your appointment. We try to keep clinics running on time, but emergencies may lead to some delays. You'll informed of any delay when you check in at ENT reception.

You may need extra tests or investigations when you come for your appointment. We recommend allowing up to 2 hours for your appointment and tests. If you need to fast before your appointment we will let you know.

Appointment reminder

We will send you a reminder text message 2 days before your appointment. We need your permission and mobile phone number if you want to receive this reminder.

If your personal details have changed, contact the Appointments Department (+44 (0) 1534 442464so we can update your records. Changes in details can be:

  • name
  • address
  • phone numbers
  • change of GP

Failure to do this means we may have no way of contacting you.

What you should bring

Your appointment letter has all the details for your appointment.

Bring a list of all medications you are taking, including prescribed, bought and alternative such as herbal remedies

Those with hearing problems or dizziness will often need a hearing test first. You will receive a separate letter from the audiology department for this.

When you arrive for your appointment, please check in with the reception desk on the second floor of the Gwyneth Huelin wing. We'll register your attendance, check your details and ask you to take a seat in the waiting area.

If you can't attend an appointment

If you need to change or cannot attend your appointment, please phone the number on your appointment letter as soon as possible. We may be able to give your appointment to someone else. Last minute cancellations or failure to attend costs us approximately £80 for every missed appointment.
