Early scans
Usually your first scan will be at 12 weeks, however there may be occasions when you need an early scan.
Early scans take place in Rayner Ward at the hospital. You may require a transvaginal (internal) scan, this means the scanner is placed inside the vagina.
This gives the clearest and most accurate picture in early pregnancy.
12 week scan
The 12 week scan is sometimes called the dating scan. The sonographer will estimate when your baby is due based on the baby's measurements.
This scan can also include a nuchal translucency (NT) scan, which is part of the combined screening test for Down syndrome, if you choose to have this screening.
20 week scan
The 20 week scan is sometimes called the anomaly scan, or mid-pregnancy scan, and usually takes place around 20 weeks of pregnancy. This scan checks for structural abnormalities (anomalies) in the baby.
This scan can also be an opportunity to find out the sex of your baby, if the sonographer can get a clear view. Speak to your sonographer at the start of your scan to let them know if you want to find out your baby’s sex. Be aware that it’s not always possible for the sonographer to be 100% certain about your baby’s sex.
However, the main purpose of this scan is to check your baby's health.
Private scans
Extra private scans are available at an extra cost, if you would like to arrange a private scan you should talk with your midwife or you can contact one of the
obstetrics consultants directly.

What to expect at your scan
One adult can accompany you for the scan.
Your scan will be carried out by a sonographer in a dimly lit room so they can get good images of your baby.
You'll lie on a couch and the sonographer will put ultrasound gel on your tummy and glide a probe over your skin. A black and white picture of the baby will appear on the ultrasound screen for the sonographer to examine.
The scan usually takes around 20-30 minutes if your baby is lying in a good position. It may take longer if baby is in an awkward position or moving around a lot.
When the sonographer has completed their examinations, they will offer some scan images for you to take home.
Children in the scan room
Unfortunately children are not allowed in the scan room and you're not allowed to take any video or photos of the scan.
