The island is divided into 12 parishes.
The parishes look after their parishioners and manage the local amenities, similar to how a local council does in the UK.
Your local parish offers a number of services in your area including parish rates, dog licences, driving licences, registering to vote in elections, rubbish collection and recycling. These services are funded by parish rates.
When you know where you are going to be living, you should contact your local parish.

The parishes issue various licences such as:

Rubbish collection and recycling
Household rubbish is collected every week by your parish. The day it is collected will depend where you live in the parish.
Glass must be kept separate from household refuse.
Bring-bank recycling facilities are available in all parishes and kerbside recycling is also offered by some parishes.

Parish rates
You're liable to pay parish rates if you are an owner or occupier of property in the parish. Rates are paid annually. You should check your lease or rental agreement to find out if you're liable for rates.

Elections and voting
To vote in a public election, you'll need to be on the Electoral Register.
To add your name to the register, you’ll need to be 16 years of age and have lived in Jersey for the last 2 years. Alternatively, if you’ve lived in Jersey for the last 6 months you must also have lived in Jersey for other period(s) that total 5 years.
You may register up to 3 months before reaching 16 years of age or completing the period of residence in Jersey.
