Legal

Jersey has a long-established legal system committed to the latest international standards of regulation and information exchange.

The Bailiwick of Jersey is a separate jurisdiction from the UK and is distinct from the other Channel Islands such as Guernsey.

Many of the island’s larger legal firms have multi-jurisdictional offices and they, along with smaller firms and sole practitioners, focus on legislation related to the international finance industry as well as private client work, litigation and other legal services.

Appointed by the Crown, The Attorney General and the Solicitor General (the Law Officers) are responsible for criminal prosecution work.

Most notaries in Jersey are partners in local firms of advocates or solicitors. There is a local notary society.

As a qualified legal professional, to practice as an advocate or solicitor of the Royal Court of Jersey you must have completed the Jersey Law course and passed the relevant examinations in addition to the appropriate UK qualifications and Jersey-based practical experience. Jersey qualified lawyers swear an oath of office when entering the legal profession.
