Employment Forum seeks new member

11 October 2006

The Employment Forum was established in 1999 as an independent, non-political consultative body in the creation of Employment Legislation for Jersey.

The Forum is made up of three employee representatives, three independent members and three employer representatives and all positions are honorary. Members are appointed by the Social Security Minister to a three year term on the basis of their interest in employment relations and the diversity of their backgrounds.

There is currently a vacancy for an employee representative who must have knowledge or experience of, or an interest in, employee issues (generally within the workplace) or trade union issues.

The Forum’s primary role is to consult with representatives from all sectors of the Island’s business and working community, to develop the Employment Legislation programme (including reviews of the Minimum Wage) and to make recommendations to the Minister.

Kate Morel, Forum Secretary, said, "The Forum performs a very important role in the development of practical employment practice and legislation that is right for Jersey, based on consultation with the public.

It is vital that applicants can demonstrate that they are able to consider issues broadly and to act in an unbiased and independent manner, irrespective of their personal views. Members must serve in a personal capacity and not as a representative of any particular interest group.

The issues are often complex and members must be willing to contribute constructively to discussions and work to achieve consensus within the group with the aim of creating balanced recommendations."

Applicants for this honorary position are asked to write, in confidence, briefly setting out details of relevant experience and the attributes you can bring to the Forum to Kate Morel, Employment Forum Secretary, P.O. Box 55, La Motte Street, St Helier, JE4 8PE, or K.Morel@gov.je
