Planning Minister approves new guidelines for Design Statements Following public consultation the Minister for Planning, Senator Freddie Cohen has adopted new procedural guidelines for the preparation of Design Statements which accompany planning applications. This is a result of discussions, held earlier this year, with the President of the Association of Jersey Architects, Mike Waddington, when it was agreed that clearer guidelines on the form and content of design statements were required.
Senator Cohen said: “Not only do design statements help those making decisions to understand the thinking of the designer and the rationale for a design, the guidelines will also help the designer to think about his proposals in a structured manner.”
This is part of the Minister’s broader aim to raise the standard of building design in Jersey. Previous initiatives include 'Architecture Week' which saw several world-renowned architects visiting the Island in October and the establishment of a ’Design Review Group’ within the Planning department.
