Temporary changes to Bellozanne opening hours

03 December 2007

Transport and Technical Services has had to change the opening hours of the Bellozanne Bulky Waste Facility and Recycling Centre to allow for emergency baling of the large stockpile of waste that has accumulated at Bellozanne following the total failure of the Incinerator plant.

The revised opening hours will be:

Monday to Thursday: 07:30 - 14:45            (original times 07.30 - 16.15)

Friday: 07.30 - 14.45                                (original time 07.30 - 15.15)

The new arrangements will commence on Wednesday 5th December.

Due to the public demand for these facilities at the weekend, the opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays will remain unchanged.

Continuing technical problems with the Incinerator plant have resulted in a large stockpile of waste accumulating at Bellozanne.  This waste has to be baled and transported to La Collette.  Both sites have reached full capacity for loose waste but baled waste can still be stored at La Collette.

Transport and Technical Services will start to bale the surplus waste immediately but as the machinery necessary for this process is accessed via the Recycling Centre, the site must be closed to the public for safety reasons.

The site will close slightly earlier during the weekdays to allow TTS staff to commence baling and transporting waste from mid-afternoon up to 2100 hrs.

The new opening hours will continue for a trial period of 21 days, after which the situation will be reviewed and it is hoped that the site will revert back to the original opening hours.

John Richardson, Chief Officer for Transport and Technical Services, said ‘This highlights the growing pressure on our ageing Energy From Waste Plant. It is vital that the implementation of our Solid Waste Strategy continues to progress, particularly the enhancement of recycling services and a replacement Energy From Waste Plant.’
