The Legislation Advisory Panel is inviting comments, in general terms, of the sort of issues that will need to be considered if there is to be a change in the legislation to allow for civil partnerships.
The Advisory Panel is minded to proceed with some change to the present position although it would not wish to pursue a course of action which would extend the right to marry to same-sex couples.
It is proposing that further consideration should be given to the following options for progressing (or not) new legislation:
1. To extend the right to marry to homosexual couples;
2. To follow the route taken by the
United Kingdom
and create civil partnerships, which could be entered into by homosexual couples;
3. To create the right to form a civil partnership between both heterosexual and homosexual couples; and
4. To maintain the existing position.
