Officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards, (DVS) and the States of Jersey Police conducted a road check on
Tuesday 27 February 2007
, at La Collette.
Four commercial vehicles were impounded at DVS for further inspection. Reports will be submitted to the Police for consideration of prosecution.
Defects included: brakes; bodywork; lighting and in particular oil / fuel leaks.
Five further vehicles were issued with defect notices requiring vehicles to be repaired and inspected at DVS. Defects included: bodywork; lighting and tyres. One person was found to be driving a commercial vehicle without the required licence.
DVS and the Police are urging operators of commercial vehicles to ensure that their vehicles are in a roadworthy condition and that each vehicle is regularly maintained. Operators, who do not maintain their vehicles, should expect to have those found to be in defective condition, impounded with the likelihood of prosecution.
Alan Muir
, Head of DVS and Inspector of Motor Traffic, said “It is disappointing that our checks continue to find vehicles that are not fit to be used on the road. By not carrying out basic checks and maintenance on their vehicles, these companies and drivers are putting other road-users at risk, as well as themselves. Fuel and oil leaks, damage the road surface, are costly to the tax-payer to clean up and repair and create serious hazards for other road-users, particularly those on two wheels. These companies must act more responsibly and take safety seriously.”
