From 1 December 2008 the duty free goods allowance for travellers arriving in Jersey from outside the EU will be increased in line with revised Council of the European Union increases.
These allowances are for the non-commercial import of goods, including alcohol and tobacco, and the change means an increased allowance for wine from 2 litres to 4 litres per person and introduces a new allowance for beer of 16 litres per person.
The Minister for Treasury and Resources, Senator Terry Le Sueur, said – “It is important to avoid any misunderstanding or confusion regarding duty free allowances for both tourists and local residents travelling to the Island. In order to remain in step with other jurisdictions I have decided to increase the local allowances for travellers to correspond with the revised EU allowances.”
Although only people of 17 years or above can benefit from the alcohol and tobacco allowance, all travellers arriving by commercial air and sea transport benefit from the ‘other goods’ allowance which has been increased from 175 euros to 430 euros.
For travellers arriving by private aircraft or vessel the other goods allowance has been set at 300 euros.
