The process to authorise a new flag for Jersey vessels has taken another step forward with the issue of a Ministerial Decision from Deputy Alan Maclean, the Assistant Minister for Economic Development. At present Jersey vessels are able to fly the Red Ensign, but research has suggested that there is value in giving a choice of flags to owners of Jersey vessels above a certain size.
As the flag of the British Merchant Fleet, the Red Ensign attracts considerable respect worldwide, and represents high standards in safety but a number of British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies have already designed their own.
The Jersey flag would be the Red Ensign but with the traditional Jersey Crest added to it. This would allow yachtsman to show their pride in Jersey whilst at the same time raising our international profile.
Work will now be undertaken with officials in the UK and a formal proposition will be put to the States in due course.
