Two new members to join the Social Security Advisory Council

The Social Security Advisory Council (SSAC) was set up in 2003 as an independent body to provide advice on social security issues to the Minister for Social Security.  It has undertaken a number of reviews including research into the needs of individuals with disabilities under the Income Support scheme.  The Council also publishes an annual report.

Last year the Council visited its sister organisation in the United Kingdom and gained valuable experience of the work being undertaken on policy development in a number of areas.

The two new members of the Council are Colin Russell and Christopher Harris, who will now join Chairman John Rosser and fellow members Jackie Collins, Annette Cullen, Fran Houghton and Sylvie Seymour.

During 2008, the Council will be examining communications within the Social Security Department and effectiveness between the Department and the public as well as assisting in the forthcoming policy review of incapacity benefits, whilst also maintaining a watching brief on the development of pension provision within the island.

The Council anticipates advertising for new members early next year and would be very interested to hear from those who may be interested.
