30 January 2008
From 1 February 2008 , the charge for a parking unit will rise from 52p to 54p and the cost of a monthly season ticket for any long stay car park will be £92, rising from £88. These increases mirror the annual cost of living increase as at June 2007 which equated to 4.3% but are rounded up or down either to the nearest penny (for paycards) or the nearest pound (for season tickets). The last increase took effect in February 2007.
In tandem with this parking charge increase, the Minister is also introducing an Ecofriendly Parking Permit which will allow owners of certain low emission vehicles and recognised hybrid vehicles to receive a 50% discount on the cost of parking.
The Minister for Transport and Technical Services, Deputy Guy de Faye, said “I am delighted to be able to introduce an incentive for drivers to consider the purchase of vehicles that will make a real difference to both the local and global environment. Although there are relatively few such vehicles currently registered, I would hope that schemes such as this would encourage people thinking of changing their car to consider ‘ecofriendly’ models.”
Vehicles that are eligible for this scheme will be those emitting less than 100 grammes of CO2 per kilometre – this is Band A of the recognised banding system established to measure CO2 emissions. Hybrid vehicles can be within Band B.
The Minister added “The half price parking could represent a saving of around £550 a year for someone who buys monthly season tickets for one of the long stay car parks. This is a significant saving and may make the purchase of an environmentally friendly vehicle more attractive.”
The income from parking charges is paid into the Car Park Trading Fund which pays for the maintenance, policing and repair and renewal of all public car parks. The initial cost of the discounted scheme is minimal and can be funded from within that Fund.
