Primary Schools have been invited to ‘Recycle a Christmas Song’ to encourage more people to recycle this Christmas.
The Transport and Technical Services (TTS) Recycling Team invited primary schools to recycle a Christmas song by changing the words to create a message that promotes recycling.
The winning entry, entitled ‘Reuse and Recycle’, was written by Year 5 at St Luke’s Primary School (with a little help from music teacher Sara Dodds). ‘Reuse and Recycle’ is sung to the tune of ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’ (lyrics included below).
As part of their prize, the class will be performing ‘Reuse and Recycle’ at 1pm on Tuesday 2 December 2008 in the Royal Square as part of the entertainment at the annual Soup Kitchen organised in aid of the Jersey Shelter Trust.
The competition is part of the ‘Recycle this Christmas’ campaign which has been kindly sponsored by HSBC. Betony Taylor, Corporate Communications Manager for HSBC Bank International, will be presenting the competition prize to St Luke’s School immediately after their performance, from the TTS Recycling Trailer which will also be in the Royal Square during the Soup Kitchen.
Miss Taylor commented: “I was really impressed with the standard of the entries, not only musically, but also the amount of recycling information that the songs contained. All the students were really passionate about the topic and were really keen to share what they were doing both in school and at home. As an Island community, having an awareness of what happens to our rubbish and how we can reduce our effect on the environment is especially important at this time of year. Congratulations to everyone who took part and thank you for your hard work - I hope the visitors to the Soup Kitchen will listen to the important messages in the lyrics of your songs. “
Emma Richardson, Assistant Recycling Officer, said ‘The aim of the competition was to engage primary schoolchildren with the topic of recycling in a fun and interactive way. They have brought the topic to life and learnt lots in the process. Congratulations to St Lukes School for creating the winning entry, I am looking forward to hearing it again on 2 December.’
Leaflets providing information on how Christmas cards, wrapping paper and real Christmas trees can be recycled will be distributed by the TTS Recycling Team from their Recycling Trailer on Tuesday 2 December in the Royal Square during the annual Soup Kitchen.
