Her Majesty The Queen has approved the request of the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, to retire from office at the end of June next year. Sir Philip, who is now 62, took up his appointment as Bailiff in February 1995.
He was admitted to the English Bar by the Middle Temple in 1968 and was called to the Jersey Bar the following year. In 1972 he was elected to the States as the deputy of Grouville and served in that capacity until his appointment as H.M. Solicitor General in 1975. He was subsequently appointed H.M. Attorney General in 1986 and was made a Queen’s Counsel. In 1994 he was appointed Deputy Bailiff and became Bailiff of Jersey the following year. He was knighted in 1996. He was elected an honorary fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford in 1995 and made an Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple in 2003.
Sir Philip stated –
“It has been a great honour to serve the Island and its people as Bailiff, but after nearly 15 years in office it will be time to make way for my successor. I am very grateful for the many kindnesses shown to me by the community and for the support of innumerable people in public life and in the civil service.”
