One thousand tonnes of household putrescible (decaying) waste that has been temporarily stored at La Collette can now be moved to Bellozanne this week for incineration.
The waste was collected from homes and businesses over several days in June and July this year but due to emergency repair work at the Bellozanne Energy from Waste Plant, the waste could not be delivered into the Incinerator. However, this still leaves some 15,000 tonnes of non putrescible waste left in storage at La Collette.
Transport and Technical Services (TTS) will start to retrieve the waste today but it will take several days before all of the waste has been removed from La Collette.
The waste that is being moved is normal household waste that has been stored for several weeks and is therefore likely to be smelly. In order to minimise disruption and ensure the waste is moved as quickly as possible, TTS will transport the waste during the afternoons and evenings in covered lorries. This will allow a greater volume of waste to be moved than would be possible in the daytime traffic. Moving the waste into Bellozanne when the site is closed to deliveries will also avoid any disruption during the day when Parish refuse and waste from private contractors is delivered from early morning onwards.
John Richardson, Chief Officer Transport and Technical Services said “Maintenance work is still in progress at Bellozanne but we are in a position to start retrieving the waste temporarily stored at La Collette. The waste has got to be moved and by transporting it when the majority of daily and Parish deliveries have taken place, means it can be done more quickly and with less disruption. We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused but it is essential that the temporary stockpiles are removed to provide a contingency should we need to divert waste from Bellozanne again in the future.”
