Army skills training for local students

15 June 2009

Army personnel will shortly be in the Island delivering team building and leadership skills training to five local secondary schools.

The training will be delivered to year nine students, aged 13 – 14 years, and will involve a range of activities including building army buggies and cranes, tug of war and basic survival techniques.

The scheme, which has been run in Jersey schools for several years, has been well received by students and teachers alike.  Nicole Walls, Senior Teacher at Le Rocquier School is delighted to welcome the Army back “We find the scheme encourages students to challenge themselves, helping to develop greater self confidence." She continued “Our students are really looking forward to their Army day, having heard how fun it is from older students in the school who have benefited from the training in previous years.”

The visit is being co-ordinated by Careers Jersey, as Advisor Jeremy Field explains “This is a fantastic opportunity for students to acquire and develop a range of skills.”  He continued “The activities are designed not only to enhance students’ learning whilst at school, but also to help develop transferable for skills required for employment, such as listening, processing instructions and taking personal responsibility within a team situation.”
