The Chief Minister is in Madeira from 11 -14 May, on an official visit organised to maintain links between the two islands. Senator Terry Le Sueur is accompanied by the Bailiff during the visit, which is an opportunity for Jersey to renew its close ties with Madeira and the special relationship between the two islands.
It is now 11 years since the President of Madeira, Dr Alberto João Jardim, and the Bailiff signed the Friendship Agreement aimed at promoting relations between the two communities. Last year, Dr Jardim visited Jersey on Liberation Day to celebrate the agreement’s 10th anniversary.
During this week’s visit, Senator Le Sueur will again be meeting Dr Jardim as well as the Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Filipe Machado de Albuquerque, and other government representatives. A number of cultural events and official functions have also been planned.
Senator Le Sueur said, "I am very pleased to be attending this series of meetings with representatives in Madeira. I am confident the visit will help to maintain and strengthen the important links between the two islands, and will continue to demonstrate the importance of Jersey’s Madeiran community. ”
