The Social Security Minister has considered and approved the Employment Forum’s latest recommendation for a revised minimum wage rate of £6.20, which would be implemented on 1 April 2010.
Social Security Minister, Deputy Ian Gorst, said “Having considered in detail the Forum’s recommendations, I am pleased to announce that I have accepted the proposed two percent increase. A £6.20 minimum wage is sensible and appropriate in the current economic climate. It is important that a balance is struck between improving the minimum wage and protecting jobs. It remains my aim however that, when Jersey comes out of this recessionary period, we must continue to move the minimum wage towards 45 percent of average weekly earnings.
I am mindful that businesses must have adequate notice of the new rates, so preparations are underway to amend the relevant legislation and I anticipate bringing the legislation to the States in January 2010.”
The Forum’s full recommendation is available in the past consultations section of the States website.
