On Thursday 11 June 150 Year 5 students will gather together at the Merton Hotel to spend an exciting day discussing their learning. This will be the inaugural Student’s Learning Conference and will start with a keynote address from UK Educational Consultant Di Pardoe, author of ‘Towards Successful Learning’.
The students will then present to each other their own experiences of learning, before attempting a group challenge which will call upon all their learning skills. These learning skills, which include problem-solving, team work and communication are all integral parts of today’s primary curriculum preparing students well for life, work and their secondary school experience.
Year 7 students from Les Quennevais School will be on hand during the day to record events and will feedback to the conference delegates at the end of the day.
The 150 Year 5 student delegates have all been involved in various fund-raising activities to contribute towards the cost of the day’s conference.
In commenting on the plans for the conference, Sarah Johnson, Learning Coordinator at the Education, Sport and Culture Department, said - 'We are very pleased that Di Pardoe will be giving the keynote speech. Di is a recognised leader in the field of learning and has been working with our teaching staff for the last few years. Di has run learning conferences for students in the UK but this is a first for Jersey'.
