St John road check

09 April 2010

Of the 721 vehicles that passed through this St John road check, 4 vehicles were impounded, 2 drivers have been told that they will be prosecuted, 24 drivers were issued with defect notices and a further 10 drivers have to produce their driving documents at St John Parish Hall.

One vehicle was found displaying the wrong registration mark.  Inspector of Motor Traffic Alan Muir commented:  “As in previous St John road checks we were kept busy with a wide variety of defects and offences. A high percentage of vehicles had either incorrect, illegible, or broken registration plates. Two drivers had failed to notify DVS of a change in the vehicle registration details. The registration number must be displayed on a flat, unbroken, vertical surface.  The background, numbers and letters must comply with the colour, shape and size set down in law and they must be kept clean.  Failure to comply is an offence subject to a fine up to £500.”

Between 7.30 am and 9 am on Thursday 8 April 2010, officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS), Customs and Immigration, the States of Jersey Police roads policing unit and the Honorary Police of St John joined forces to conduct a road check outside the parish hall.

1 small commercial vehicle with severely corroded bodywork was impounded at the check and is subject to a full inspection report.  Both the driver and owner are to be prosecuted. The driver of an unregistered car is also to be prosecuted.

A tractor with hydraulic oil leaks was impounded to a workshop for repair and a large commercial vehicle was also impounded for repairs to defective brakes. A van with inoperative stop lamps was impounded to a near-by work site until repaired.

In all 24 drivers were issued with defect notices requiring them to present their vehicles at DVS with defects rectified. Defects included broken door mirrors, worn wiper blades and incorrect or unreadable registration plates.

Officers from Customs and Immigration sampled fuel from 36 vehicles, and were pleased to record that all were running lawfully.

10 additional drivers have to produce their driving documents at the St John parish hall.
