The Minister for the Environment has announced a further expansion of the Energy Efficiency Service home insulation scheme.
The scheme now offers assistance to all individuals aged over 70 with household savings of less than £30,000 if living alone or £50,000 if co-habiting. It's in addition to the existing eligibility criteria that include all households on Income Support as well as individuals in receipt of the Westfield 65+ Health Plan or the GST Food Costs Bonus.
The Energy Efficiency Service is a free service offered as part of the States of Jersey’s commitment to reduce energy use on the Island. Eligible households qualify for a range of professionally installed measures from loft insulation and replacement boilers to draught proofing and low energy light bulbs. The service is primarily funded by the States as well as a voluntary seed contribution of £500,000 from the Jersey Electricity Company.
Deputy Robert Duhamel, Minister for the Environment said “Call the Energy Efficiency Service if you qualify for this home improvement and tell your friends and neighbours if they could benefit too. Your energy bill could reduce by around £230 per year and your home will be warmer.”
This view is supported by Sir Nigel Broomfield, Chair of the Jersey Energy Trust. He added “As well as providing real benefits to local people through reduced fuel bills the Energy Efficiency Service makes a significant contribution towards Jersey meeting its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol and becoming a more sustainable Island. To date the measures installed by the service will reduce Jersey’s carbon dioxide emissions by 13,500 tonnes when calculated over their total lifetime.”
Islanders are invited to call the Energy Efficiency Service directly on 441611 for more information on the scheme and how to apply. Application booklets will also be made available in parish halls and at a number of community organisations in the coming weeks.
