Course aims to help adults find work

23 March 2011

A 6-week training scheme will aim to help unemployed adults find work in the retail or hospitality sectors.

The course, called ‘Advance to Retail and Hospitality (Customer Services)’ is part of Advance Plus, a programme funded by fiscal stimulus money to help over-20s back into work.

The course starts on 18 April and involves a combination of a 3-week work placement and training that includes:

  • developing customer service, sales and communication skills
  • CV and interview techniques
  • emergency first aid at work
  • manual handling
  • workplace fire safety
  • self-development and confidence building

Since Advance Plus was launched in September 2010 it has run 3 schemes, mainly focusing on office-based roles. 26 people have moved directly into employment as a result.

Sophie Le Sueur, project manager for Advance to Work and Advance Plus, said “The training and support that our schemes offer provide the ideal stepping stone for people who are motivated to find work but are struggling in the current climate.

“This scheme is particularly targeted towards hospitality and retail where there are some great opportunities locally to gain paid employment and forge successful careers.”

The deadline for applications is Monday 28 March.
