Jersey Fire and Rescue are urging people to make sure that disposable barbeques are completely cold before putting them in public bins.
The warning has come following an increase in calls received by the service to attend fires in public bins. On Sunday 22 July Jersey Fire and Rescue were called to Longbeach car park where a disposable barbeque had started a fire in a commercial wheelie bin.
Station Commander Marc Le Cornu said "Finally we have some hot and sunny Jersey weather and hopefully Islanders will be enjoying it to the full. We do however attend many bin fires, like the one at Longbeach, where people have used the disposable barbeques and then put them into dustbins before they have cooled sufficiently.
"We would like to remind people to ensure that their barbeques are cold before disposing of them, ideally by pouring water over them and allowing them time to go cold or by putting the barbeques alongside the bins if they are still warm."
