The £100 note that is being issued by the States of Jersey Treasury to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is now available for pre-order (from 16 April 2012). The note, which officially goes on sale on 1 June 2012, will be available for purchase either individually (at face value) or within a commemorative Diamond Jubilee wallet.
The note will feature English, French and Jèrriais and has been designed around a portrait by the artist Chris Levine and holographer Rob Munday, a commission produced for Jersey Heritage in 2004. Levine and Munday worked in collaboration to produce a body of work entitled ‘Equanimity,’ which included both the main image on the banknote and the related holographic image on the security stripe.
In 2004, the portrait was exhibited at the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace. The hologram has now been selected as a lead image in the National Portrait Gallery's touring Jubilee exhibition 'The Queen: Art and Image'. It will also soon feature in a new commission being undertaken called ‘The Diamond Queen’, which will include 1,100 brilliant-cut diamonds to create a copy of the crown worn by the Queen during her coronation.
This image will also be used on a £10 commemorative Jersey Post Diamond Jubilee stamp. The hologram reproduced on the stamp is a unique achromatic digital embossed holographic stereogram – thought to be the first of its kind in the world.
Senator Philip Ozouf, Treasury Minister, said “The £100 note being issued by the Treasury is part of a series of initiatives that will mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Jersey. In order to issue a new £100 note, the States amended the existing 1959 law, which limited the maximum denomination of any currency note to £50. This is an appropriate way for Jersey to celebrate its loyalty to the crown.”
Local art adviser Philip Hewat-Jaboor, who has been acting in an honorary advisory capacity, commented, “This portrait of the Queen is a moving and powerful image of statehood and will, in this Diamond Jubilee year, allow us many exciting opportunities to present to the wider world a better understanding of our Island’s heritage and our allegiance to the monarchy.”
Jersey Heritage Director, Jon Carter, added, “We commissioned this portrait to show the value of Jersey's traditions in a very contemporary way, so we are really pleased at the tremendous international publicity it has generated for the Island. The new banknote will take that even further.”
