The Minister for Transport and Technical Services (TTS), Deputy Kevin Lewis has agreed to allow free parking in Pier Road car park for 5 Saturdays starting from Saturday 11 August to assist in boosting retail activity in town.
The Minister agreed this initiative following meetings with representatives of town retailers who believed an offer of free parking may increase shopper activity in St Helier.
Levels 1 to 12 of Pier Road car park will be available for free parking on the following dates:
Saturday 11 August |
Saturday 18 August |
Saturday 25 August |
Saturday 1 September |
Saturday 8 September |
Pier Road will be the only multi-storey to allow free parking, it is the largest with 741 spaces. Incentivising parking in the high capacity Pier Road car park is expected to lead to parking being more readily available in other smaller St Helier car parks.
The Minister for TTS, Deputy Kevin Lewis said “I have listened to the town traders and I have been shown figures that indicate that fewer people are shopping in town. I have offered this Saturday free parking concession in the hope that this will improve the situation for them. It is a limited offer as it does mean a loss of income to the car parks trading account which funds the operation of parking control and the refurbishment and replacement of our 87 public car parks.”
