Transport and Technical Services is making the following 3 locations filter in turn junctions:
• St Saviour’s Road / L’Avenue et Dolmen du Pré des Lumières
• St Saviour’s Road / St Mark’s Road
• Springfield Road / La Petite Rue de Val Plaisant
The signage for the junctions is being installed on Monday 23 April.
Filter in turn has operated successfully in Jersey and Guernsey for some time, but is not known in the rest of Europe. It is best suited at junctions where approaching traffic from 2 directions should be given equal priority, traffic volumes are significant and similar and traffic exits the junction in 1 lane.
These 3 junctions fit that description and the majority of traffic has tended to use them unofficially as filter in turns, particularly at peak times, without signage. The signage will therefore formalise its use for all road users.
This will be the first time that new signage, approved by the Minister on 24 February, will be used. It is based on the current give way red triangle sign which is internationally recognised and although non English speaking road users may not understand the filter in turn wording, they would know that they should give way.
Deputy Kevin Lewis, the Minister for Transport and Technical Services said "I am a keen supporter of filter in turn junctions, they encourage courteous driving behaviour which improves road safety. I am pleased to be the first TTS Minister for many years to install some new filter junctions".
