Guidance for the development of a new primary school in St Martin has been opened for consultation.
The guidance will be used to inform decisions on any subsequent planning application for the school and the Department of the Environment and the Environment Minister Deputy Rob Duhamel want to hear the views of those interested in and affected by the proposal.
The States has safeguarded Field 327A, which currently provides the playing field and playspace immediately adjacent to the existing school, for the provision of the new school as part of the 2011 Island Plan debate. Capital funding has been agreed in the States budget.
The consultation paper, issued in the form of a draft development brief for the site, sets out the Minister’s proposal to adopt a planning brief for the development of a new primary school and nursery on Field 327A.
The purpose of the brief is to establish the general development principles for a new primary school in St Martin and sets out the guidelines to be adopted when preparing detailed proposals for the school. It addresses issues such as:
- layout
- design
- vehicle access
- pedestrian safety
- landscaping
Deputy Duhamel said “It is important that we seek views on whether this is the right site for the provision of a new facility or whether other sites in St Martin’s Village or in other built-up areas in the east of the Island, such as Maufant, might be more appropriate, or even whether the expansion of another primary school might provide a more sustainable option so would urge anyone with an opinion on this matter to take part in the consultation.”
The consultation period on the draft planning brief will run for 4 weeks, closing on 19 March 2012. The consultation can be viewed online and printed copies are available on request from the Department of the Environment, South Hill, St Helier. Details about a public consultation event in St Martin will follow shortly.
