Fire crews and a paramedic unit were dispatched in response to a domestic fire alarm after a fire was discovered when a smoke detector sounded and raised the alarm.
Fire had broken out in a downstairs bedroom close to a 1 year old girl who was asleep in her bed across the hall. The father of the child heard the alarm and found a fire in his bedroom. He left the building with his daughter after shutting the door to the bedroom.
The fire was tackled and extinguished by 3 members of the public, who were barbecuing next door, using a garden hose and a bucket of water.
Crew commander Daniel Laurens said “Yet again the value of a working smoke alarm has been proven. Without it we would have been faced with a far more serious situation.”
