Students get involved in learning conference

Around 100 primary and secondary school pupils will take part in a conference next week, designed to motivate them to excel in their learning. The Student Learning Conference is on Tuesday 26 June at Fort Regent and has been staged by the Education, Sport and Culture department for the past 3 years.

The students will hold a ‘marketplace’ to show examples of their work and promote good learning from their own schools. Each group will set up a stall with tables and display boards explaining their school’s approach to learning. Pupils will then circulate around the stalls, collecting ideas to take back to their own schools.

The aim is for the young people to take time out of the school day and talk about what learning means to them. The event will be led by Di Pardoe, one of the UK’s leading education specialists. She will focus the children on their aspirations for the future before asking them to consider what they need to do now to achieve their goal.

The department's Professional Adviser for Schools, Sarah Johnson, explains the value of the conference: “This event has been extremely successful in the past. The feedback we have from the students has been very positive. It provides an opportunity for them to understand what good learning looks like, its importance and how they are empowered to be in charge of their own learning.”

Primary school pupils will be joined by students from Les Quennevais, Haute Vallee and Le Rocquier secondary schools, who are all keen to be involved and help out on the day.
