The Millennium Town Park, opened by the Minister for Transport and Technical Services (TTS) on 15 October last year, has received very positive feedback from the public through the Jersey Annual Social Survey.
Just over half of those questioned (54%) had visited the park at least once. The survey asked for a rating on various features in the park – water features, play equipment, planting scheme, overall design and toilet facilities. Of those who expressed an opinion, more than four-fifths rated each aspect of the park as either ‘very good’ or ‘good’.
Minister for TTS, Deputy Kevin Lewis, said “TTS spent a lot of time consulting with the public over what should be included in the park. It was obviously time well spent as people seem very happy with what has been provided.”
Britain in Bloom Award
The Millennium Town Park has also won awards. In October, TTS learned that the Park had won a RHS Britain in Bloom 2012 – Sustainable Landscaping Award.
The Park was reviewed by Britain in Bloom judges as part of the St Helier submission. Parks and Gardens Manager for TTS Derek Noble showed the judges around the park and told them about the work involved in the transformation and the environmental features built into the structure.
At the time the visit was assumed to be a general interest visit, no awards were applied for or mentioned. It was a surprise when the judges decided they would present St Helier with this discretionary award.
Sustainability
Earlier in the year, the park won the Jersey Electricity Award for Sustainability as part of the Jersey Construction Council Awards.
Deputy Lewis said “I am so pleased that the park has won these awards. TTS has an excellent team who manage and work with appointed contractors to deliver infrastructure projects for Jersey. It is great for them to get this kind of recognition.
"Turning a car park, on land that had been contaminated from its previous use as a gas works, into an award winning park in just ten months took a lot of hard work. The gardeners who have taken over caring for the park have also done an excellent job.
"The park is a highly used community area and they have played a huge part in enhancing people’s enjoyment of this popular facility.”
