Competition for young songwriters

La Motte Street Youth Centre, known for its Rock School, Gig School and Song Schools, is launching a new song-writing competition for Jersey’s young people.

 

The arts-based youth project is about to start ‘Songs Against Prejudice’, a competition to encourage young people to write lyrics that focus on equality and diversity.

 

 

It’s been organised by La Motte Street youth worker Ben Stanton, who says the new project has great potential “La Motte Street has an excellent reputation for offering young people opportunities in music, dance, technology and running a radio station.

 

"This competition branches out into something new and is specifically for those who are into creative writing, poetry or lyrics.”

 

The competition is open to all young people aged between 13 and 18 and organisers are working hard to arrange for the winning song to be recorded professionally by a notable local or national artist.

 

Ben added “We know the winning song will be of the highest quality and we want to make sure it gets the airing it deserves."

 

 

Senior youth worker, Ivor Richards, is confident that ‘Songs Against Prejudice’ will appeal to a wide audience. He said “This competition not only creates an opportunity for our talented young people to show off their poetic skills but the intention is to really raise the awareness among competitors and the audience of the issue of prejudice, whether that be on a personal, social or global level.

 

“We are always keen to develop our Youth Service agenda through the medium of arts and this is a golden opportunity to make a big impact.”
