31 January 2013
The United Kingdom Border Agency has updated its 'Life in the UK' handbook, which is available to help people prepare for the Citizenship test when applying to naturalise as British citizens.
The new handbook has been on sale since 28 January 2013. It focuses on the history, culture and government of the UK and celebrates British achievements and prominent individuals in the fields of science, culture, literature and sport.
Citizenship tests taken in Jersey
In Jersey the Citizenship test is administered by Highlands College on behalf of the Customs and Immigration Service. It ensures that migrants who seek permanent residence, or naturalisation as a British citizen, demonstrate their knowledge of the English language and life in the UK and Islands.
The test is based on the handbook ‘Life in the UK' and on a Jersey Supplement. It consists of 24 multiple choice questions, with six questions based on information about Jersey. The pass mark for the test is 75%.
New material in use from April
The first test at Highlands College to use material from the new handbook will take place on Wednesday 3 April, to allow candidates time to prepare. Tests taken in Jersey before that date will be based on the previous edition.
No changes are being made to the Jersey supplement.
Highlands College
Highlands College administered eight Citizenship test sessions in 2012, which were taken by 233 candidates. 172 passed and 61 failed, which is a 73.8% pass rate.
The Jersey supplement is available to download from this website or from the Passport Office of the Customs and Immigration Service.
