Islanders who have been to Jersey’s Accident and Emergency Department (A and E) are to be asked for their views on their experiences for an independent national survey.
A random sample of 850 adult patients who attended A and E in January this year will shortly receive letters from the Picker Institute, which provides independent surveys to hospitals and healthcare trusts so they can measure the quality of care given, and their performance.
Responses
Their responses will form part of a National Accident and Emergency Patient Survey, which is then distributed to healthcare organisations by the Picker Institute.
This is the first time HSSD has worked with Picker on a survey covering A and E. In the past, the Health and Social Services Department has worked with the Picker Institute to produce surveys on the Day Surgery Unit, Maternity, Paediatric and Inpatient Services.
Feedback
Deputy Director of Operations at the General Hospital, Gary Kynman, said “We would urge anyone who receives a survey from the Picker Institute to take a few minutes to complete it. Feedback always helps us improve our patient care and there is no better method than asking Jersey patients about their experience within the Island’s Emergency Department.
"We want to know what we are doing well, and what we could improve. A and E is the gateway to emergency care in Jersey and an important part of the Island’s healthcare services, so it’s vital we get it right.
“Picker feedback is independent and compares us to other hospitals in the UK. We hope there will be a good response rate, and will report back on the results of the survey.”
Accredited organisation
Although HSSD has passed on the names and addresses of a randomly-selected set of 850 Islanders who attended A and E in January, no clinical details are shared. It is also important to emphasise that the Picker Institute is an accredited organisation for this type of work.
