Plans for a 91-bedroom hotel, a café, shops and offices in a five-storey building at Charing Cross have been approved by the Planning Applications Panel.
The Panel met today (18 December) and considered proposals by the Channel Islands Co-operative Society for 4-6 Pitt Street, 6-8 Dumaresq Street and 21-28 Charing Cross.
Earlier proposals for the site have been contentious. Pitt and Dumaresq Street contain some of the oldest buildings in town – a small and rare surviving cluster of the old town quarter from the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. They are on Jersey’s list of Sites of Special Interest.
Under the Co-op’s current proposals, agreed today, the grade 4 listed buildings 6 and 7 Dumaresq Street will be demolished and the grade 3 listed buildings, 4, 5 and 6 Pitt Street and 8 Dumaresq Street will be kept and restored.
The Planning department supported the application. The panel endorsed the recommendation, voting five to one in favour. Panel members acknowledged the loss of the two important listed buildings but said on balance, the benefits of the current scheme in regenerating the town centre outweighed the loss.
