Le Rocquier School has won a competition to see which Jersey secondary school could save the most energy.
The How Low Can You Go? challenge ran from Monday 17 to Sunday 30 November and involved schools competing to reduce their energy use (in proportion to total number of pupils and excluding heating).
The Energy Efficiency Service’s outreach and administration officer, Holly Lefebvre, said “Traditionally in November, schools, businesses and homes significantly increase their energy usage as the days draw in and people spend more time indoors and have to switch on lights for longer. Le Rocquier’s energy consumption increased by just 2.5% which was a fantastic effort.”
For their prize, DJ Craig Alder from The Drift will play a set at Le Rocquier School on Friday 12 December.
“We wanted everyone in the schools to become more energy conscious – staff as well as students – we’re really pleased with how well all of the schools have done,” Mrs Lefebvre said. “They should all be really proud of their hard work, and I hope Le Rocquier have fun burning off some positive energy with their prize!”
The How Low Can You Go? competition was part of the Turn It Off campaign, an Eco-Active initiative to get people to turn off electrical appliances that aren't being used, such as:
- chargers
- TVs
- lights
- computer monitors
- games consoles
- tablets and other portable devices
- photocopiers
This marks the close of the Turn It Off campaign for 2014, but all of the free campaign resources remain on the States of Jersey website, and the Energy Efficiency Service continute to give free and impartial information on how to save energy.
