Gorey boatyard restaurant agreed

Proposals for the redevelopment of the old Gorey boatyard and shop have been approved by the Planning Applications Panel.

The Panel met today and agreed plans for the quarry site and shop to be developed into a new restaurant and delicatessan incorporating shops, courtyards and terraces.

The restaurant is expected to cater for 120 covers. Existing cafes and restaurants in the area have a combined ability to cater for 581 people. The applicant’s plans also include a footpath from the back of the development to link to the Mont Orgueil footpath.

When the plans were published, the Planning department received two petitions, 100 online comments and 750 flyers against the proposals. Most were concerned about the development’s impact on parking on the pier and the effect the new restaurant could have on existing businesses.

Public transport

The Planning department report on the application stated that public transport to and from Gorey is excellent, and that although parking spaces can be hard to find at peak times, another restaurant won’t make a significant difference.

It also stated that the new development, including repairs to the Old Sail Loft as a potential listed building, would contribute positively to the look of the popular tourist location.

Benefits of the venture

The department said the application had to be carefully considered and concerns of residents and businesses balanced against the benefits of the venture. It is in line with the Island Plan policy of encouraging economic growth and diversification. It will improve a rather neglected site, keep it running as a business, and keep a potential listed building in use.
