Charities benefit from airport fundraising

05 November 2014

Nine local charities will receive an equal share of £9,000 which has been collected at Jersey Airport through a series of fundraising activities.

The fundraising initiative was first launched in 2012 as part of Jersey Airport’s 75th anniversary celebrations. Ports of Jersey staff selected the nine charities, which represent a wide range of causes, including health and animal welfare, and support for children and the elderly in the local community. Each chosen charity has a Jersey connection and was selected specifically to represent a different decade of the 90 years during which Jersey Airport has been open.

A cheque for £1,000 has been sent to each of the charities with an accompanying letter from Group CEO for Ports of Jersey, Doug Bannister, who explained that money had been raised through a number of in-house organised fundraising activities, such as festive raffles and cake sales. Generous donations by the travelling public to one of the four collection boxes located around the airport also contributed to the total amount raised.

The nine charities to benefit from the fundraising efforts, together with the year in which they were first established in Jersey, are as follows:

  • Brig-Y-Don Children’s Home (1939)
  • Good Companions Club (1948)
  • Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust (1959)
  • Meals on Wheels (1962)
  • CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children (Jersey) (1974)
  • Jersey Hospice Care (1982)
  • Motor Neurone Disease Association (1992)
  • Autism Jersey (2005)
  • Jersey Alzheimers Association (2010)

Ports of Jersey facilitate and support a number of charitable fundraisers throughout the year, including the annual Jersey Poppy Appeal and the Jersey Christmas Appeal, as well as those supported by its on-site business partners.
