Coronation Park at Millbrook and Sir Winston Churchill Memorial Park at St Brelade have received Green Flag Awards from the UK charity Keep Britain Tidy.
The Minister for Transport and Technical Services (TTS), Deputy Kevin Lewis, and his Assistant Minister, Deputy John Le Fondre, visited the parks today and congratulated staff on their achievement.
TTS submitted the two parks for a Green Flag Award, an annual scheme run by Keep Britain Tidy to recognise outstanding parks and green spaces. This is the first time that TTS has submitted any sites to be considered for a Green Flag Award.
Expert judges from the award scheme visited Coronation Park and Churchill Park to assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. As well as looking at the park itself, the judges also question and look at documentation about management policies and processes.
Manager of Parks and Gardens for TTS, Derek Noble, said “Jersey has some fantastic parks. We take great pride in looking after them and we receive many positive comments from the public. However, we have never properly compared ourselves against an independent standard. The Green Flag Scheme has allowed us to do this; it is a great indicator of our performance.”
Deputy Lewis added “The staff at TTS do a marvellous job and it’s great and well deserved that they have now got this national recognition. Having good quality green space for the community to use and enjoy is very important and adds to our quality of life.”
